Risk Assessments
Why do I need a Risk Assessment?
Following completion of an Environmental Site Assessment, there may be identified elevated concentrations of contaminants. Yet will these concentrations pose an unacceptable risk and will remedial actions be required? A site specific Risk Assessment is necessary at this stage to fully answer these questions and will ensure that remedial costs are appropriate.
WD provides a Risk Assessment service that derives site specific criteria of soil, groundwater and vapour for the protection of human health and controlled waters.
The CLR-11 framework for Risk Assessment comprises a three stage process comprising
- Stage 1 - Intial site conceptual model
- Stage 2 - Comparison with generic criteria
- Stage 3 - Derivation of Site specific criteria
"Real world remedial criteria are the corner stone of developing a successful remedial scheme"
WD has developed a CLEA compliant model, recently revised to include the Science Reports updates, for the main priority contaminants to derive site criteria for human health. Remedial tagets for controlled waters are also developed using the Agency Remedial Target Methodology.
A report is prepared and issued to the regulatory authorites that will include all of the technical information required to justify the proposed site specific criteria/targets.
Is Remedial Action Required?
If the human health criteria and controlled waters targets have been exceeded then some form of action will be required. WD will develop pragmatic remedial criteria based on the results of the risk assessment, for adoption during the remedial works.
